Britain Remade welcomes moves to stop councils blocking large housing developments

Responding to the government’s plan to restrict the ability of councils to block large housing developments. Sam Richards CEO of pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade, said:

“Anything that makes it quicker and easier to build the homes Britain needs, especially where demand is highest, is welcome news. But this announcement will do nothing to help small developers, building 20 or 30 homes, who will still have to face changing plans multiple times over many years with the cost passed on to buyers and renters.

“For far too long, some obstructive councils have taken pride in delaying or killing off desperately needed homes, pricing out young people and trapping families in overcrowded flats.

“This reform should finally call time on those councils that have weaponised the planning system to stop development, and it sends an unmistakable message: if you refuse to build the homes Britain needs, the government will step in and ensure plans are given the green light

“Local voices matter, but if the government is to have any chance of meeting its target of building 1.5 million homes this parliament, the planning system must be streamlined and unnecessary barriers removed so more people can own a home.”
