Responding to the publication of the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce’s interim report, Sam Richards, CEO of pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade said:
“Britain is currently building the most expensive nuclear power station in the world. It’s little wonder the Nuclear Regulatory Taskforce has concluded our nuclear regulatory system is not fit for purpose.
“In the 1980s, after accounting for inflation, we built nuclear power stations for half today’s cost per megawatt; in the 50s and 60s, a quarter of the cost. New nuclear power stations are eye-wateringly expensive because we have chosen to make them that way.
“In September, ahead of the taskforce’s full report, Britain Remade will publish a science-led review of nuclear regulation. Cutting the cost of new nuclear is essential, both for seizing the economic opportunities of AI and slashing carbon emissions.”
