Responding to the government’s latest funding round for clean energy, Sam Richards, CEO of pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade, said:
The fact that the latest renewable energy auction results have once again increased is hugely disappointing. Not only are these prices high, they are now locked in for 20-years under new contracts with generators.
“This underscores the urgent need for further radical planning reforms to cut red tape and speed up delivery. The irony of this auction round is that the government’s sprint to buy as much wind as possible while it’s expensive will actually lock us into higher electricity prices, making it harder to decarbonise.
“More than anything Britain needs cheaper power. To save jobs and industry, we need to bring down industrial power prices. To get emissions down, we need it to be attractive to switch to electrify heating, transport and just about everything else. The deals struck today don’t do that.”
