Responding to the Government's latest Road Investment Strategy, Sam Richards CEO of pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade, said:
“The Government’s latest Road Investment Strategy is pathetic.
“Slashing a pipeline of road building projects by two thirds that is already years behind schedule, while talking up maintenance, isn’t a strategy, it's simply managed decline.
“For too long, we’ve treated road investment as optional rather than essential. Congestion is rising, major routes are overstretched, and businesses are paying the price in lost productivity. While we fail to build the motorways we need - building just 300 miles since 1990 - France has delivered 2,700 miles.
“Maintaining existing roads matters, but it cannot come at the expense of building the infrastructure our economy needs to grow.
“After years of delay and drift, this plan risks entrenching stagnation. To global investors it sends a signal that Britain is no longer serious about delivering the road infrastructure needed for a modern, growing economy.”
