Britain Remade responds to Angela Rayner’s housing speech
Responding to Angela Rayner’s housing speech, Sam Richards, CEO at Britain Remade, said:
“In setting out plans to tackle Britain’s growth-killing housing shortage, Labour have the right priority. But there is no way a new Labour government can deliver the 1.5m homes they have promised in the next Parliament by just building new towns.
“Instead Labour should prioritise and be more ambitious with their plans to expand existing towns and cities through urban regeneration and extension.
“In London alone almost 900,000 energy efficient homes could be built over the next 15 years through estate renewal that includes gentle densification and building close to the capital's tube and train stations.
“Along with building the homes needed so that young people can get on the housing ladder, our research has shown that hitting their ambition to build 1.5m new homes would boost Treasury coffers by £9.2bn, providing a shot in the arm for our public services.”
