WIND farms and solar fields have popular support — especially if they bring a discount on fuel bills, a poll reveals.

The renewable energy projects would be backed by two thirds of people — even if built near their homes.

They have gained support as six in ten of those questioned believe Britain imports too much energy, according to the survey by Britain Remade, a new campaign group that aims to get the country manufacturing again.

Its CEO Sam Richards, an ex-aide to Boris Johnson, said: “Building wind farms, solar fields and nuclear power stations more quickly will halt Britain’s reliance on foreign energy imports, bring down fuel bills, and create jobs.

"We’ll all prosper because of it.”

He added: “We believe we need to get Britain back to what it’s good at.

“We can shape the world with our science and engineering again.”

Mr Richards claims there is now strong support for an expansion of solar fields and wind farms.

The survey found 64 per cent would back wind and solar projects near their communities if they got discounts on bills.

Mr Richards added: “We believe we need to get Britain back to what it’s good at.

“We can shape the world with our science and engineering again.”
