Responding to the government’s promise of a new ‘golden age’ for nuclear power, Sam Richards, CEO of pro-growth campaign group Britain Remade, said:
"It’s great to see the UK and US working together to unlock a new wave of nuclear power, but we must learn the lessons of the past, especially Hinkley Point C which is on course to be the most expensive nuclear power station in the history of the world.
“Britain desperately needs clean, reliable nuclear energy to cut bills and boost energy security, yet building new nuclear in Britain takes far too long and costs far too much. Without making it quicker and easier to build both large gigawatt scale reactors and smaller minireactors we will never be able to reap the benefit of the growth and jobs these investments promise.
“Places with a proud industrial and nuclear heritage like Hartlepool are crying out for new reactors. If the new ‘golden age’ for nuclear power is to mean anything, we need to slash the time it takes to get reactors from the drawing board to spades in the ground so that Britain’s industrial heartlands can once again thrive.”
