London has a housing crisis

House prices in London are now 12.5 times average incomes. The last time they were this high relative to the average salary, Queen Victoria was on the throne.

This means a young couple doing the right thing and earning a decent wage would have to scrimp and save for three decades just to afford a deposit. Homeownership is out of reach for many without the help of the Bank of Mum and Dad. The reason for this is we’ve not built the homes we need.

Since the 90s, London has seen jobs surge by 62% and its population grow by 2 million. People from all over Britain and the world, including a third of all England’s immigrants, come to London seeking opportunity, but housebuilding has failed to keep pace.

Housing in London doesn’t have to be unaffordable. It is a choice. For too long, we have chosen not to build enough to meet demand. London’s strong economy will always draw people in, but high rents and house prices are pushing lifelong Londoners out. The next mayoral election is an opportunity to change this.
